He'd only stopped for a moment when Billy tried to interject, carefully
moving him back before spinning back on Neil. Even though it would seem
like Neil could take Steve, it was turning out very much the opposite.
He was still yelling, still had the man pinned and had punched Neil a few
times before Billy was finally able to get between them and stop him.
Steve was panting, that growl still just barely coming out as he pulled
Billy back away from the man, boring holes into him with his eyes as he
pointed at him over Billy's shoulder.
"Touch him again. Touch him again and I swear to god, I will fucking kill
you."
Billy knows nothing good can come of this. His dad is going to have a helluva shiner tomorrow and he knows -he knows- he’s going to pay for Steve’s outburst. That’s going to make the alpha even more angry and upset about it all but he can’t worry about that right now.
Now, he needs to get Steve out of here and get his punishment over and done with so he can curl up and sleep and forget the pain in his gut that comes from neither.
He let Billy push him away, though he didn't stop glaring daggers at Neil
until after he took a few steps back and looked at Billy.
"Call me. I mean it. Call me if you need anything." He said, watching him
before huffing and turning to walk away. His knuckles hurt and he felt like
his heart was racing out of his chest, but it felt like it was worth it.
He just hoped Billy didn't hate him for doing it. He doubted Neil was going
to stop, but he honestly hadn't been able to help himself.
"I will." They both knew it was a lie; there was no way Billy was going to be able to call Steve tonight, no matter what happened.
As soon as Steve's in the car and pulling away, Billy lets out a shaky breath and turns to face what he knows is coming.
The door is barely closed behind him before it starts and he drags himself to bed afterwards, curls into a ball and cries himself to sleep. Max brings him water and Tylenol sometime after Neil and Susan are asleep and the young alpha pets his head gently and leaves him be.
The next morning Steve was waiting in the parking lot for Billy, watching
for his car before straightening up when he saw it. He watched Max get out,
looking at the girl who just looked at him before ducking her head and
running off.
"Billy!" He called out, walking over to check on the other. He pulled the
car door open for him without a thought, frowning. "You alright?"
Billy expects that Steve to be waiting for him but it doesn't make it any easier when the alpha comes over and opens his door. He doesn't even have it in him to be upset that he'd opened his door like he was a girl on their first date.
He's slow to get out of the car, wincing at the way it makes his ribs ache even more.
"I'm fine, Steve." He was far from fine but he didn't want to worry him.
"You are a terrible liar, you know." He said softly, shaking his head as he
looked him over before at least following him off to the school. He shoved
his hands in his pockets, staring down at the ground.
"I'm sorry. If he...you know. If he punished you because of me." He
whispered, biting his lip and looking at him.
“He’d have done it anyway.” That’s not a lie; Neil has already been mad when Billy got home. What had happened with Steve had only served to make him angrier and probably done some damage to his ego.
The walk from the car park to the school is slow, one of Billy’s hands tucked inside his jacket to support his bruised ribs. “Don’t worry about it, yeah? It’ll be alright.”
He knew better than to believe any of it, but he didn't bring it up again.
"Yeah." He said, pushing the door open once they reached the building. He
was careful, at least helping the other boy as they moved to and from
class. Not that he did anything to see incredibly obvious. He brushed his
fingers through his hair, smiling once lunch time rolled around.
"So we have that project we need to work on for Mrs. Craig's class. Want to
come over after school and work on it or wait til this weekend?" He bit his
lip, rubbing his neck and watching Billy.
"We can get it started tonight and get it finished on the weekend?" He hadn't slept much and he was tired and maybe he could catch an hour of sleep while he was there before going home.
The longer the day dragged on, the more he ached and by the time he was waiting at Steve's locker, he was breathing shallowly to try and take the pressure off his ribs. "Hey, Harrington."
Once he made it to his locker, he looked Billy over and raised an eyebrow.
"Hey...jesus. You gonna be okay?" He asked, reaching out and resting a hand
on his arm.
"You think you can make the drive to my house? I've got something you can
take for the pain. S'from when I broke my arm a while back." He bit his
lip, wanting to put a protective arm around the other teen but he stopped
himself.
"Yeah. I'm fine." He's fooling no one, he knows, but he doesn't want to get into it in the hallway at school. No one else needs to know that his ribs are so bruised he's actually worried Neil broke one.
Nodding, Billy closes Steve's locker and let's the alpha lead the way out to the car park. "I can manage. It's not that far." And he'd probably even take up the offer of the pain killers too.
Thankfully they didn't take too long to get over to Steve's and once inside
he made Billy a glass of kool-aid before handing him a pain pill. "Come on.
Go lay down in my room. I'll work on the project."
He smiled softly, brushing his fingers through his hair as he got all their
notes for class laid out along with his book so he could start working on
it. He went to help Billy into the bed before he started working though.
Billy takes the tablet and the drink, let's Steve lead him upstairs to the bedroom and force him to settle. He kicks both his boots off and goes easily, jeans and all, dropping back into the pillows with a sigh.
Everything smells like Steve, like alpha and he feels safe enough to doze off when the tablet kicks in and does it's job.
Once he's made sure Billy is settled in and actually asleep, he went back
downstairs to work on their project. He let the other sleep for a couple of
hours, keeping an eye on the time before grabbing a snack.
He smiled, making a couple of sandwiches before filling a bowl with chips.
Once he'd done that, he went upstairs, carrying everything on a tray and
setting it on the table next to the bed. He sat down, reaching out and
brushing the other teen's hair from his face.
"Billy, wake up. Brought something for a snack. You need to eat something."
Billy doesn't move the entire time that Steve is gone, dead asleep for the first time in a long time, barring the last night of his heat. When the alpha rouses him, he's slow to wake at first but then startles, jolting upright and letting out a pained noise.
"Hey, whoa, whoa...you're safe, Billy." He said, settling next to him and
moving the food over where Billy could reach it. "Come on, eat something
okay? I've been watching the time. You're still good." He reached out,
touching his shoulder.
"You alright?" He stroked through his hair again. He knew he shouldn't be
so sweet, but he couldn't help himself. He really cared about Billy and he
wanted him. Wanted to be with him.
Billy doubled over slightly, holding his aching ribs for a moment before finally sitting up right once more and taking the offered food.
Steve's doting but Billy can't bring himself to mind too much right now. He's in pain, tired, hungry and stressed and it's easy to let the alpha take care of him. He'll deny it until he's blue in the face if anyone asks about it.
"Yeah. Just sore. Thanks for this." He indicates the food.
"You know I don't mind. Its my fault you're banged up like this." He said
quietly, shrugging a shoulder and looking sad about the statement.
"Anything else I can get you? Should probably send you home with a few pain
killers." He snacked on a few of the chips, sighing.
"If I knew you'd be okay I would just have you stay the night. I know you
could use the sleep." He said, tilting his head.
"Neil was pissed. I don't know if he was madder that an alpha stood up for his useless omega son or that he lost or if it's just because I'm an omega and you could smell it. But he was pissed." Neil was always mad at him for something but last night had been something entirely new.
"Pissed or not...it was worse because of me. I just...I wanted him to stop.
I wanted him to never touch you again. I still don't want him to." He
leaned into him, pressing his forehead against Billy's temple. "I just want
to protect you."
Even if Billy wouldn't appreciate it. The only reason he'd called out for
Steve was because he'd been the only one there during his heat. Surely he
wanted someone else. They were just friends.
"Steve, it would have been worse anyway. I forgot my suppressants and the stink of omega was all over me. As far as he concerned, I'm a disgrace." It was probably why he liked Max so much more than him.
"I'll be fine, Steve, really." He knew the alpha just wanted to protect him and he'd have to be blind to not realise that Steve wanted more from him than what they had. But for as long as he was under Neil's roof -so until he was 18- there was no way it was possible.
"He's a fucking idiot." He mumbled, shaking his head and sighing quietly.
He just looked at him, nodding a bit.
"Pretty sure we both know you won't until you're out of there, but either
way...I'm gonna help as much as I can. You know you can come over here
anytime you need to." He smiled, very lightly nudging his shoulder. "Now,
I've got some done. Since tomorrow is Saturday, want to come over and
finish it up?"
Yes he was, but Billy didn't feel like getting any further into it right now. Instead, he focused on eating and let himself enjoy the scent of a safe alpha.
"Steve? Nothing changes, yeah?" Because their definition of being there was probably entirely different. As long as he was under Neil's roof, under his guardianship, there was no way they could be more.
And beside, Steve was still under the influence of his heat hormones and he'd decide that dealing with Billy's shitty attitude wasn't worth having access to his ass.
At that he nodded, pulling away and smiling sadly. "Yeah. I understand.
Doesn't mean I'm not gonna care." He said anyways, ignoring the hurt he
felt.
Steve took it as something completely different nevertheless. He was going
to do everything he could to try and make it easier for Billy either way.
He would help him get away when he could, let Billy rest here and just hang
out.
"Alright, let me go get those pain pills. Don't need you getting in trouble
for staying too late." He said, pushing himself up and turning away.
